History of OGSV

The Obstetrics and Gynecological Society of East Andhra Pradesh had its humble beginning in Andhra Medical College on April 29, 1966, by the then Head of the Department, Dr. N Subhadra Devi.The other founder members were pioneers like Dr. C.V. Ramani, Dr. K. Prasunamba, Dr. R. Satyabhama Reddy, Dr.H.M.Lazarusand Dr. G. Rama Krishnam Raju. The Obstetrics and Gynecology department has had the honor of having stalwarts as heads of the department. Padma Shri Dr. Hilda Mary Lazarus was the Professor and head of the department of gynecology, Andhra Medical College in 1961. She was the first Indian to be appointed from London into the women’s medical services in India in 1917. She was also the president of the seventh AICOG in Calcutta in 1952. Dr. R. Satyabhama Reddy served as the head of the department from 1966 to 1975 who also served as the Superintendent, KGH. She was a teacher par excellence, administrator of repute and played a prominent role in advocating the significance of attending national conferences. Dr. G. Ramakrishnam Raju, who was a founder member of not only our society and Guntur Obstetrics and Gynecological Society but also a founder fellow of the prestigious ICOG of FOGSI and FIMSA, took over as president of our society from 1977 and continued till 1989. During his tenure, he enlivened the activity of the society. Since then, it has made rapid strides in all spheres pertaining to academic and social activities. The society celebrated its ‘Silver Jubilee’ in 1991 during which the founder members were felicitated. The society continued to be headed by successive heads of the departments. Some of them like Dr. R. Satyabhama Reddy, Dr. K. KameswariDevi, Dr.Y.Perindevi, Dr. R. Sasiprabha, Dr.I. Sunila Naidu, Dr.D.Punnakumari, Dr.P.P.Srinivasa Murthy, and Dr. T. Radha held prestigious higher-administrative positions such as Principal, Superintendent and Director of Medical Education of combined AP and Telangana state and contributed to the OBGYN community and women’s health at large. The Obstetrics and Gynecological Society of East Andhra Pradesh was renamed to‘Obstetrics and Gynecological Society of Visakhapatnam’ on May 30, 2007 under the presidentship of Dr. K. Subba Raju. He started thepostgraduate teaching program 'TEACH’ and the quarterly bulletin ‘REACH’ during his tenure. Dr. T. Radha, immediate Past President OGSV, was the co-editor and gave the name ‘Reach’ to the quarterly update. During Dr.K.Subba Raju’s period, his team published two postgraduate text books ‘A Practical Handbook of Obstetrics Emergencies’ and ‘A Practical Handbook of Intrapartum Care’. Prestigious orations are being conducted in the annual CME program in the names of Dr. G.R.K. Raju, Dr. Achyutha Menon, Dr. Sagi Lakshmi Kantham, and Dr. R. Sasiprabha and Golden Jubilee Dr. H. M. Lazarus Oration. OGSV has the credit of successfully conducting three state conferences, two in the combined state of Andhra Pradesh in 2004 and 2011, and one in 2016 in the newly formed state of Andhra Pradesh. The present member strength of OGSV is around 450. In 2018, a landmark decision was taken by the society to open the opportunity of leadership to all its members in addition to the department in Andhra Medical college. Hence, Dr. K. Subba Raju again took over the reins as the President. Dr. T. Radha, Organizing Chair of this prestigious YUVA FOGSI South Zone 2020 continued the legacy of her predecessors till she handed over the baton to Dr. T.Padmavati, her successor.
